Baby girl with mermaid syndrome - Amazing Birth Defect

Milagros, who is now a year and eight months old, was born with a rare congenital defect known as sirenomelia, or "mermaid syndrome" and had surgery in June, 2005 to separate her fused legs. The deformity occurs in one out of every 70,000 births and there are only three known cases of children with the affliction alive in the world today.

Baby mermaid - Amazing Birth Defect

Peruvian surgeons have performed an initial operation to separate the fused legs of a 9-month-old girl known as the "baby mermaid" because of her rare birth defect, her doctor said Thursday. Dr. Luis Rubio said his team inserted three silicone bags on Tuesday into the tight coating of skin around Milagros Cerron's legs.
